Working environment

The post-doctoral fellow will be recruited by INRA and work within the “Economics Research Unit on Structures and Markets in Agriculture, Resources and Territories” (SMART-LERECO), which is a joint research unit of INRA and the agricultural university Agrocampus Ouest. We are a research and teaching group in the economics of agriculture, agri-food and the environment, that is internationally acknowledged for the quality of its work not only in academics but also in expertise. Our scientific project gives priority to four main research topics: agricultural producers’ behaviour and public regulations; markets, agriculture and development; industrial strategies of agri-food firms in a globalized economy; organization and performance of agricultural and food chains.

The post-doctoral fellow will take part in a research project aiming at studying the dynamics and drivers of farming business termination in France. The adopted approach will be that of production micro-economics and micro-econometrics modelling through the estimation of models such as survival analysis models and discrete choice models, using individual farm-level data which are already available at SMART-LERECO. The research will not only deal with the study of farm exit at retirement time but will also put emphasis on early business termination, be it related to economic bankruptcy or to farmer’s personal motives.

Training and skills required

Candidates should:

  • hold a PhD in economics; preferably (but not necessary) in production microeconomics;
  • have a solid background in econometrics and quantitative methods;
  • possess the required analytical skills in managing large datasets and conducting applied work;
  • demonstrate a potential to publish in leading international peer-reviewed journals;
  • highly skilled in mastering English reading, writing and speaking;
  • be motivated, rigorous, autonomous and able to work within a team.

A prior and recorded experience in empirically applying the econometric models planned in the post-doc (survival analysis models, discrete choice models) will be appreciated. Knowledge of French is not a requisite condition.

Applicants should send (i) a cover letter to motivate how this position fits their professional project and why they think they suit the offered job, (ii) their job-market publication, (iii) a detailed curriculum vitae along with a full list of references, as well as (iv) university transcripts and certificates of PhD and Master studies. Documents should be sent in electronic form to both Laure Latruffe (laure.latruffe@inra.fr) and Laurent Piet (laurent.piet@inra.fr).
